Sugar ki report thodi upar aayi… ab kya? Many people with high blood sugar keep getting the same tablets refilled for years without ever asking whether they need a closer look. This guide explains when it makes sense to see a diabetologist, in Ghatkopar or anywhere in Mumbai, what such a visit involves, and which checks every person with diabetes should not skip.

What a diabetologist does

A diabetologist is a doctor who specialises in diabetes care. Many people with type 2 diabetes are looked after well by a family physician or a physician experienced in diabetes, and the two can work together. A specialist review is most useful when your diabetes is harder to control, is changing, or is starting to affect other parts of your body.

When to see a diabetologist

Consider a specialist review, and ask your own doctor if you are unsure, when any of the following applies:

  • You have just been diagnosed, and want a proper plan from the start.
  • Your sugar is not controlled despite treatment, for example repeated high readings or an HbA1c above the target your doctor has set.
  • You have low sugar episodes, or big swings between high and low.
  • You use insulin, or your doctor is thinking of starting it.
  • You have type 1 diabetes, or a child or teenager has diabetes.
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or had diabetes during a past pregnancy.
  • You notice possible complications: numbness or tingling in the feet, wounds that heal slowly, changes in vision, swelling, or foamy urine.
  • You have other conditions such as kidney disease, heart disease, thyroid problems or PCOS that complicate treatment.
  • You have pre-diabetes along with risk factors, and want to prevent it progressing.

Symptoms that need attention

High blood sugar can cause increased thirst, frequent urination, tiredness, blurred vision, unexplained weight loss, slow-healing wounds and repeated infections. Some people have none of these, which is why regular checks matter. Infections can also push sugar up, which is a particular issue in monsoon. You can read more in our article on why monsoon illnesses hit diabetics harder.

Seek medical help immediately if you have very high sugar with vomiting, stomach pain, fast breathing or drowsiness, or if you have low sugar with confusion, fainting or a seizure.

The yearly checks everyone with diabetes needs

Diabetes affects more than blood sugar. Doctors commonly check the following, with how often decided for you personally:

  • HbA1c, which reflects your average sugar over roughly three months, often checked every few months.
  • Blood pressure and cholesterol, since they add to heart and kidney risk.
  • Kidney tests, including a urine test for protein and a blood test for kidney function.
  • An eye examination, because changes in the retina can develop without symptoms.
  • A foot examination, including sensation and circulation.
  • Weight, and a review of your medicines and any side effects.

What to bring to the appointment

  • Your sugar readings or log, and your glucose meter.
  • All your medicines, including insulin, and supplements.
  • Previous reports, including HbA1c, kidney, eye and lipid results.
  • Your family history of diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease.
  • Questions about food, festivals, fasting, travel and illness.

Questions to ask

  • What HbA1c and sugar targets are right for me?
  • Do my medicines suit me, and what side effects should I watch for?
  • What should I do if my sugar goes too low or too high?
  • How should I adjust during illness, festivals or fasting? (Never change medicines on your own.)
  • Which complication checks do I need, and how often?

Diabetes in Ghatkopar families

Diabetes often runs in families, and festive food, sweets and irregular routines make it harder to manage. If a parent or sibling has diabetes, it is worth having your own sugar checked, whatever your age or weight. A yearly check for the whole family costs little and can catch problems years earlier. Frequently asked

A diabetologist specialises in diabetes care and is often involved when diabetes is complex, poorly controlled or complicated. Many people with straightforward type 2 diabetes are managed well by a family physician, and the two can work together.

If you have pre-diabetes along with risk factors such as excess weight, PCOS, high blood pressure or a strong family history, or if your readings keep rising, ask your doctor whether a specialist review would help you prevent progression.

It depends. Many people are seen every few months when treatment is new or sugar is unstable, and less often when things are steady, with yearly checks of the eyes, feet and kidneys. Your doctor will set the schedule for you.

Commonly HbA1c (often more than once a year), blood pressure, cholesterol, kidney tests, an eye examination and a foot examination. Your doctor decides which and how often.

Not necessarily. If your sugar is steady and you are doing your regular checks, your usual doctor may be enough. See a specialist if your control slips, you have low sugars, complications appear or your situation changes.
