Most of us walk into a first appointment and only remember what we meant to say once we are back outside. A little preparation changes that. This guide covers what to bring to a first consultation, what to note down beforehand and which questions are worth asking, so you and your doctor can make the most of your time.

What to bring

  • A list of your medicines and supplements, with the dose and how often you take them. Bringing the strips or bottles is even better.
  • Past reports and prescriptions, such as blood tests, scans and discharge summaries, in date order if you can.
  • Your allergies, including any reaction to medicines.
  • Your ID and any insurance details, if you need them.
  • A family member or friend, if that helps you remember and understand.

What to note down beforehand

  • Your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse.
  • Your main worry, in one sentence, so it does not get lost.
  • Changes you have noticed, such as weight, sleep, energy, appetite or mood.
  • Family history of diabetes, heart disease, thyroid problems or cancers.
  • Your routine: meals, activity, sleep and any tobacco or alcohol use, said honestly.

Questions worth asking

  • What do you think is going on, and what else could it be?
  • Which tests do I need, and why?
  • What are my options, and what are the benefits and risks of each?
  • What can I do myself, and what should I avoid?
  • When should I come back, and what signs mean I should call sooner?

Ask the doctor to repeat anything you did not understand, and consider writing the plan down before you leave.

What usually happens at a first visit

At most clinics, a first visit includes a conversation about your history and symptoms, a check such as blood pressure and weight, and sometimes an examination. Your doctor may suggest tests and explain a plan. Every clinic works a little differently, so it is fine to ask how the visit will go when you book.

On the day

  • Arrive a little early, and wear comfortable clothing that is easy to adjust.
  • Ask when you book whether you should fast, since it depends on the tests.
  • Be honest, even about things that feel embarrassing. It helps your doctor help you.
  • Take your usual medicines unless you are told otherwise when you book.

A consultation is not for emergencies. If you have chest pain, severe breathlessness, heavy bleeding or feel that your life is at risk, call 108 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Questions to ask the clinic when you book

  • How long will the visit take, and do I need to arrive early?
  • Do I need to fast, or stop any medicine, before the visit?
  • Which reports should I bring?
  • What are the consultation charges and payment options?
  • Can a family member come in with me?
  • How do I contact the clinic if I have a question afterwards?

Asking these questions in advance saves time on the day, and makes the visit calmer for everyone.
